Sometimes we use the word “reality” to mean the truth about something. I am trying to work from a bigger context here, so bear with me.

For a reason I trust is good, God has led me into an exploration of metaphysics. I have become increasingly interested in why we think the way we think, what we are really thinking about, and how that thinking occurs. From a spiritual perspective this relates to a favorite Bible passage.

And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Romans 12:2

Conformity and transformation are matters of the mind. To “repent” is to change one’s mind (from Thayer’s Greek Lexicon). Therefore, repentance is a change of mind that leads to the repurposing of our heart and the resultant change in our behavior. Repentance begins in the mind.

God has determined that renewing our minds is key to our being made in the image of His Son’s glory.

But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord. 2Corinthians 3:18

So, here I am… encouraging you to consider your mind.

BEWARE!! Your mind will resist the exercise. The carnal mind has been operating unnoticed (i.e., subconsciously) for years. It does not want to be exposed. Do not underestimate its persuasiveness!

In order to avoid a total freak-out rejection, I am offering an introductory low-threat and practical application. I trust God will introduce you to other considerations in the near future. In the meantime, don’t forget: The carnal mind must be overcome.

Three Realities in the Room

Every Workplace Leader is faced with three realities on a regular basis. Every time we sit across from someone, there are three realities at play.  Navigating the overlay and interplay is a critical leadership skill.

Reality number one is the big “R” Reality. It is the way things really are. For anyone that believes in a higher power, the big “R” Reality is what that power has created it to be. That Reality includes the past, present and future (meaning, it is still under construction).

Big “R” Reality consists of at least three levels: Subatomic, physical and spiritual. It includes the past, present and future (meaning, it is still under construction). It is BIG and complicated. Our minds are not capable of understanding most of it. Only its Creator can fully understand it (because He made it).

Reality number two is our little “r” reality, which is actually just a perception of Reality. Our mind regularly assumes that it has a good grasp of Reality – that its perceptions are accurate and complete. This is both naïve and arrogant.

It can also be quite dangerous. Consider the jet pilot that has lost his orientation. His perception of Reality tells him that he is flying right-side-up. Not realizing that he is flying upside-down, he “climbs” into the ground. This actually happens.

Reality number three is the little “r” perception of Reality for the person across from you. His/her mind also assumes that it has a good grasp on Reality, even while it works to project a reality that is perhaps false.

Now get this: Both of you default to the assumption that the other’s perception is very close to his/her own. If they are, then the potential for missing the big “R” Reality is only doubled. If they are not, then the likelihood for confusion, misunderstanding, deception, etc. is exponentially greater than we recognize.

So, what’s the lesson here?

It is really quite simple. As leaders in the workplace, we must become more suspicious of what we are thinking – about ourselves and others. We must take the lead in this regard. Secondly, we must allow the Holy Spirit to renew our minds. There are disciplines for this.

Third, and most importantly, we must petition the Lord to establish His kingdom – His big “R” Reality – wherever we meet with others.

In a time when everything in the world seems to be vanity, God is depending on us to proclaim that He is the great Reality, and that only He can give meaning to all other realities. A. W. Tozer

As leaders, we must start investing more and taking risks with people in our spheres of influence. With some, this can be done overtly; others will require a more tactful approach.

An easy and effective way to do this is to share our stories. For example, every job candidate interview should include our company’s story, a little of our own story, and an invitation for the person across from us to share their story. If I were starting a company, or trying to take the one to a higher level, storytelling would become an important part of the corporate culture.

Humbly yours and forever His,

Rob
